German Film Awards Honor Wim Wenders Amid Renewed Scrutiny of 1975 Film

The celebratory mood is tempered by a long-simmering dispute over a scene in 'Falsche Bewegung,' which swept the same awards ceremony in 1975. The film, an adaptation of Goethe's 'Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship,' features a nude scene with Nastassja Kinski, who was only 13 years old at the time of filming.

The Controversial Scene and Its Aftermath

Kinski, now 65, has for years been trying to persuade Wenders to remove the scene from the film. 'Although I didn't know much at 13, I already sensed that it wasn't right,' she recently told the 'Süddeutsche Zeitung.'

The film was originally rated for ages 12 and up and received the 'particularly valuable' rating, winning big at the 1975 Film Awards. Two years later, a 15-year-old Kinski appeared nude again, this time in a publicly broadcast 'Tatort' crime series episode.

Wenders addressed the criticism two years ago in the 'Süddeutsche Zeitung,' admitting he would make the film differently today. 'My view of the world has also changed, and we recognize different responsibilities,' he said. However, he maintained that at the time, the scene seemed 'artistically quite compelling' to him.

Can a Film Be Changed Decades Later?

The debate touches on whether classic films should be altered retrospectively. The article notes that directors do sometimes change their films after release, citing George Lucas's multiple revisions to 'Star Wars.' It argues that a major figure like Wim Wenders would not lose face by making such a change after more than 50 years.
