German Publishers Association Reports Declining Book Purchases Among Young Readers

The age group most affected is the 10- to 15-year-olds: the number of book buyers in this group fell by almost 30 percent, and spending in this age group declined by nearly 24 percent. According to the association's assessment, the steadily worsening state of reading literacy in Germany is now also showing up clearly in book purchases for the first time.

A Bright Spot Among Older Teens

Among 20- to 29-year-olds, there are almost 18 percent fewer buyers, according to the report. The only outlier is the 16- to 19-year-old readers, who actually bought 7.7 percent more books. The association attributes this to the boom genres Romantasy, New Adult, and Young Adult, in which revenues rose by 4.8 and 9.6 percent respectively.

Appeal to Policymakers

In addition to declining reading literacy, CEO Peter Kraus vom Cleff also attributes the declines to weak economic performance and high consumer uncertainty. Regarding the downward trend among young readers, he expressed concern with a view to the bookstore landscape: "Eine vielfältige Buchhandels- und Verlagsgesellschaft öffnet Debattenräume, die es gerade in Zeiten der Polarisierung und Spaltung zu schützen gilt, auch durch entsprechende Förderungen."

The association's chairman, Sebastian Guggolz, goes even further. He sees the figures as a political wake-up call: "Jahrzehntelange Versäumnisse in der Bildungspolitik haben zu einer fortschreitenden Verschlechterung der Lesekompetenz geführt – das Ergebnis lässt sich nun unmittelbar an den Marktzahlen ablesen." Reading ability is thus becoming an even more important prerequisite for democratic participation and self-assertion. He demanded: "Dies müsse auch ein Weckruf an die Politik sein. Es braucht umgehend konsequente Maßnahmen, um Bildung und Lesekompetenz zu verbessern. Dies muss zur obersten Priorität für Bund, Länder und Kommunen werden."

Guggolz also spoke of a trend toward the migration of reading to the internet: "Es gibt immer wieder Strömungen, manche Altersgruppen lesen weniger Bücher, dafür lesen sie mehr im Netz - englischsprachige Titel zum Beispiel."

A Counterpoint from Frankfurt

Not all observers share the pessimism. At the Frankfurt bookshop "Land in Sicht" in the Nordend district, which relocated in 2024 due to a rent increase and was supported by neighborhood residents during the move, Lyda Petzel from the bookshop collective remains calm: "Es hat sich nicht sehr verändert bei uns. Wir haben viele vergleichsweise junge Kunden, die sehr begeistert lesen und zu uns kommen, um zu stöbern." She is therefore optimistic about the 15- to 20-year-olds as well. "Da haben wir sogar das Gefühl, dass wir da Zuwachs haben." In principle, she is not worried about the next generation of readers. However, she acknowledges shortcomings among young adults: "Ich finde das schwierig, das ist mir zu viel Kulturpessimismus."

She is more troubled by the situation of the book landscape overall: "Das macht uns deutlich mehr Sorgen, als die Lesegewohnheiten von Kindern und Jugendlichen, die ohnehin eher wellenförmig sind", said Petzel. "Sie waren schon immer eine eher von den Erwachsenen beschenkte Gruppe."
