The German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels) presented its report "Buchmarkt kompakt 2025/2026" on Thursday. According to the report, young people between the ages of 10 and 15 bought almost one-third fewer books than the previous year, while the 16- to 19-year-old age group bucked the trend with increased purchases.

Market Figures at a Glance

Overall, the number of book buyers in Germany fell by 4.9 percent in 2025, the association announced. Industry revenue stood at 9.62 billion euros, down 2.7 percent from the previous year. The half-year balance for 2026 also shows further declining revenues compared to 2025, specifically a decrease of 4.5 percent. Online book sales remained stable, while brick-and-mortar bookstores saw losses of four percent.
