Berlin, July 15, 2026

German Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and his Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) agreed following talks in Berlin to continue the existing border controls between their countries.

The interior ministers of both countries spoke in the federal capital on Tuesday about the situation along their shared border and the impact of European asylum policy. Afterward, Dobrindt and Karner declared that the controls should remain in place at least until it becomes clearer what effects the EU asylum reform will have. The EU asylum reform, which entered into force in June, provides the framework against which the heads of government are evaluating their migration policy.

Border controls between Germany and Austria have been in place since 2015. In recent years, they have been extended multiple times. According to both ministers, Germany now conducts controls at all its external borders with neighboring states. Within the European Union, such measures are generally permitted only as an exception and on a temporary basis.
