Austria is extending the controls that have existed for years at its internal borders with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Slovenia for another three months, while simultaneously shifting surveillance from stationary border-point controls to more flexible border-area controls.
The corresponding ordinance took effect on Monday, according to circles within the Interior Ministry. The measure applies to the border sections with four direct neighboring states and fits into a series of extensions that Austria has carried out since introducing the controls in the course of the 2015 refugee crisis. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) had already welcomed the decision on Saturday.
