The German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) reported mixed results from its 22nd annual 'Stunde der Gartenvögel' citizen science count, with house sparrow numbers continuing to fall while finch populations showed encouraging signs of recovery.
More than 56,000 people across Germany participated in the count from 8 to 10 May, observing birds for one hour in over 38,000 gardens and parks. They reported well over one million individual birds.
The average number of birds sighted per garden fell to 28.4, down from 33.8 in 2018, continuing a downward trend observed over recent years.
The house sparrow remained the most frequently reported species, but its sightings dropped by 9 percent compared to the previous year. The tree sparrow also declined, by 6 percent.
