Berlin, April 30, 2026 Germany unemployment rate steady at 6.4% in April
The number of unemployed people in Germany fell by 13,000 in April, though the labor market showed signs of stagnation with a weak spring recovery and no change in the overall unemployment rate.
Labor Market Stagnation Continues
Germany’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.4% in April, despite a marginal decrease in the number of jobless individuals, according to data from the Federal Employment Agency. The total number of unemployed stood at 3.008 million, reflecting a decline of just 13,000 compared to March.
Andrea Nahles, chairwoman of the Federal Employment Agency, cautioned against optimism, stating, *"Eine Trendumkehr am Arbeitsmarkt ist noch nicht in Sicht"* ("A trend reversal in the labor market is not yet in sight"). Her remarks underscore concerns about the sluggish recovery, particularly during a period typically marked by stronger seasonal improvements. The spring rebound this year was notably weaker, with only 36,000 fewer unemployed people compared to April 2025.
Rising Welfare Claims and Youth Unemployment
While the overall unemployment figures showed modest improvement, other indicators painted a mixed picture. The number of people receiving unemployment benefits rose to 1.07 million, an increase of 93,000 compared to the previous year. Conversely, those eligible for citizen’s benefit—a form of social welfare—declined by 125,000 to 3.826 million.
