Poel Island, Germany — April 27, 2026
A humpback whale stranded near the island of Poel in the Baltic Sea for nearly a month is set to be transported to the North Sea this week using a 100-meter-long barge, authorities confirmed.
The young whale, estimated to be between four and six years old, has spent more than half of the past 50 days in shallow waters since it was first spotted in the Baltic Sea on March 3. Efforts to guide it back to deeper waters have so far been unsuccessful, prompting the unusual rescue operation.
Rescue Operation Underway
The barge, which arrived in Kiel on Monday after traveling from the Elbe via the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, will be used to carefully guide the whale into the North Sea. The operation marks one of the most ambitious attempts to relocate a beached whale in the region.
