WISMAR, Germany — April 27, 2026
A young whale named Timmy, stranded near the island of Poel in Wismar for nearly a month, is expected to be transported to deeper waters as early as this week. Rescue teams have prepared a 100-meter-long channel to guide the whale onto a barge, which will then be towed to the North Sea, over 400 kilometers away.
Rescue Efforts Underway
The whale, estimated to be 4-6 years old, was first spotted in the Baltic Sea on March 3 and has spent more than half of the past 50 days in shallow waters, possibly due to illness. The rescue operation has been a collaborative effort, with a specialized barge arriving in Kiel on Monday, accompanied by the tugboat "Hans."
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Environment Minister, Till Backhaus, visited the whale on Sunday and expressed optimism about the rescue. "Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt," he said, a phrase translating to "Hope dies last." The transport was initially planned for Tuesday, though it remains dependent on water levels.
Technical Preparations and Challenges
The barge is undergoing final technical preparations in Wismar before the transport begins. A 100-meter channel has been created to safely guide Timmy onto the barge, a critical step in the operation. The whale’s prolonged stay in shallow waters has raised concerns about its health, prompting urgency in the rescue mission.
Once loaded, the barge will be towed by the tugboat "Hans" to the North Sea, where Timmy will be released into deeper, more suitable waters. The journey is expected to cover over 400 kilometers, a significant logistical challenge for the rescue team.
Background and Community Response
Timmy’s stranding has drawn attention from locals and officials alike. The whale’s prolonged presence near Poel has been a rare event, with rescuers working tirelessly to ensure its safe return to the ocean. The operation highlights the broader challenges of marine wildlife rescue, particularly in the Baltic Sea’s shallow coastal areas.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about Timmy’s condition but remain hopeful for a successful outcome. The transport, if completed as planned, will mark a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to protect marine life in the region.
As the rescue team awaits favorable conditions, the community watches closely, hoping for Timmy’s safe return to the open sea.
