Accra, 15 June 2026

Ghana has sent an official protest note to Canada after the country denied entry to midfielder Thomas Partey for Ghana's opening 2026 World Cup match against Panama in Toronto.

Ghana's foreign ministry confirmed the diplomatic step, which it described as a request that Canada "seine unglückliche Entscheidung überprüft". Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa labelled the Canadian decision "rigoros und äußerst unfair". The note was triggered after FIFA confirmed that Partey's visa application had been rejected by the Canadian government, preventing him from travelling from Ghana's base camp in Boston to Toronto for the match on Wednesday, June 17.

Canadian border officials have declined to comment on the individual case. In a general statement, the Canadian immigration authority noted that a person classified as a "Sicherheitsrisiko" can be refused entry. The reason given for the Partey decision, according to those familiar with the case, is the abuse allegations he faces in the United Kingdom.

Diplomatic protest

Ghana acknowledged Canada's right to enforce its immigration laws, but raised concerns about fairness and proportionality. "Man respektiere zwar Kanadas Recht, für die Einhaltung der Einwanderungsgesetze zu sorgen", the foreign ministry said. "Die Berufung auf unbewiesene Anschuldigungen ohne gerichtliche Entscheidung werfe jedoch Fragen der Fairness und Verhältnismäßigkeit auf."
