A pink giant hare by German conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl was lifted by crane onto the cantilever roof of Vienna's Albertina on Wednesday morning, heralding the start of the anniversary weekend marking 250 years of the museum.
The sculpture, which reinterprets Albrecht Dürer's famous field hare, measures approximately 2.5 meters in height and 3.7 meters in length. Despite its monumental proportions, the hollow plastic body weighs only around 100 kilograms according to the museum, and could therefore be lifted relatively easily onto the Soravia Wing, which hovers as a canopy roof in front of the museum.
The spectacular hare-hoisting officially launches the Albertina's celebration weekend for its 250th anniversary. Until the end of the year, "Meister Lampe" — as the field hare is colloquially known — will announce the institution's jubilee from afar in eye-searing bright pink.
