Glaciologist Andrea Fischer sees Austria heading toward a phase of far-reaching "degletscherung" and warns of tangible consequences for rivers, hydropower, and shipping. This year's extreme drought and very high temperatures make it visible that the "glacier contribution" during the summer months does play a greater role for river levels than previously assumed, the news agency APA reported on Thursday.
Fischer, who works at the Academy of Sciences, stated verbatim: "Alles, was oben passiert, paust sich nach unten in die großen Flussläufe durch." What is meant is that changes in the glaciers have an immediate effect on the behavior of the large rivers in the valleys and in the lowlands. The glaciologist bases her assessment on measurements at the Jamtalferner and the Gepatschferner in Tyrol, among others.
