April 26, 2026 Electric vehicles worldwide exceed 74 million China leads The number of electric vehicles worldwide has surpassed 74 million as of 2025, with China accounting for nearly 60% of the global fleet, according to verified statistics.

Surging Global Adoption

The electric vehicle (EV) market has seen explosive growth, with 19 million new EVs added in 2025 alone. This surge highlights the accelerating shift away from fossil fuel-dependent transportation. China remains the undisputed leader, hosting approximately 44 million electric vehicles—more than half of the world’s total.

Europe is also making significant strides, with 14 major European countries collectively boasting over 16 million electric vehicles. This regional growth underscores the continent’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to sustainable mobility.

Resilience Against Fuel Price Volatility

Countries with high EV adoption rates are proving more resilient to fuel price fluctuations, according to experts. Andreas Püttner from the Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung (ZSW) emphasized this advantage, stating: *"Die Entwicklungen der Kraftstoffpreise in den letzten Wochen zeigen eindrücklich, dass Länder mit einem hohen Anteil an Elektrofahrzeugen resilienter aufgestellt sind als Länder mit geringen Anteilen."*

Püttner’s observation highlights how EV ownership reduces dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets. This economic stability, combined with environmental benefits, is driving further adoption worldwide.
