Stockholm, April 26, 2026 Global military spending reaches record high in 2025

World military expenditures reached an all-time high in 2025, totaling $2.89 trillion (€2.47 trillion) as nations ramped up defense budgets amid escalating geopolitical tensions, according to a new report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Sharp Rise in Global Defense Spending

Adjusted for inflation, global military spending rose by 2.9% compared to 2024, marking a 41% increase over the past decade. While the growth rate slowed from the previous year, the upward trend reflects heightened insecurity, particularly in Europe. The United States remained the top spender, allocating approximately €814 billion ($950 billion) to defense, despite a slight decline.

"The USA has already announced plans to increase its military spending," said SIPRI expert Diego Lopes da Silva, suggesting further hikes in the coming years. Europe saw the most dramatic surge, with defense budgets expanding by 14% collectively. Germany, for the first time since 1990, met NATO’s 2% GDP target for defense spending, joining 21 other European NATO members in exceeding the benchmark.
