The native of Lower Franconia is one of Germany's best-known television hosts. From 1987 to 2011, he hosted the ZDF show "Wetten dass..?" with a brief interruption. Last year, he bid farewell to the big stage.

Return of "Wetten dass..?"

The traditional show "Wetten dass..?" is set to return to television in December. The twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz, known through the band Tokio Hotel, are planned as hosts for the December edition. Who will permanently host the show in the future remains unclear.

Gottschalk had largely withdrawn from the classic show business even before his diagnosis. His last major TV appearance is now more than a year ago. His current statements therefore mark a rare public statement from the entertainer.

Reactions from the German media landscape were cautiously positive. Industry observers pointed out that Gottschalk's openness about his illness could benefit broader awareness of cancer. According to professional societies, the number of cancer cases in Germany has risen in recent years.

It remains unclear when Gottschalk will appear in public again. He himself only spoke of being "auf dem Weg zurück ins Leben," without naming concrete plans for future appearances. He also left open a possible return as a showmaster.

The next regular episode of "Wetten dass..?" will air in early December. The Kaulitz twins will then host the show. Thomas Gottschalk once significantly shaped the concept and turned it into one of the most-watched Saturday night shows on German television.
