Thomas Gottschalk returns after cancer treatment and declares himself cancer-free

The host, who had bid farewell to the RTL show „Denn sie wissen nicht, was passiert“ in December 2025 and thereby to the television stage, was overwhelmed by the response. „Es bedeutet mir sehr viel, dass ihr in den vergangenen Monaten an mich gedacht habt und mich jetzt mit so viel Wärme, Anteilnahme und Zuversicht begleitet“, Gottschalk went on to write. In his post he also pointed out that his update had achieved an unusually wide reach within a very short time.

Diagnosis in November and months-long break

The host publicly revealed at the end of November of last year that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Since then, it had grown quiet around the entertainer who had helped shape German television for decades. Now, roughly eight months after the diagnosis, he broke his silence and reported on the state of affairs.

According to his own account, the 76-year-old has gone through an intensive course of medical treatment. He spoke of two surgeries, 33 radiation sessions, and a three-week stay in a rehab clinic. This combination of surgical procedures, radiation therapy and rehabilitation is considered a demanding program that typically requires considerable strength from patients.

The status of the medical treatment

In December, Gottschalk had bade a wistful farewell to his long-standing hosting job. The RTL show, on which he had appeared together with the network for years, also marked for him the end of an era in front of the camera. The fact that he is now stepping back into the public eye after this break with a personal health update is seen by observers as a sign of relief.

On Instagram, Gottschalk went on to write that his update had reached „unglaublich viele Menschen“ within a very short time. He was visibly moved by this response. The procedure in question is a so-called anti-GD2 immunotherapy approach that is already approved for children with neuroblastoma. Anti-GD2 immunotherapy as an individual healing attempt

The goal of this method is to train the body's own immune system to recognize and fight certain structures on the surface of cancer cells. The vaccine contains an artificial molecule that resembles the marker GD2. The immune system thus learns to classify GD2 as an enemy — a principle that, according to the description, is reminiscent of a flu vaccination.

Gottschalk himself had explained in the „Bild" interview that he had already received eight injections and needed a total of twelve. „Danach weiß man, ob der Titer groß genug ist", he said with a view to how strongly the immune system was responding to the vaccine. His goal, he said, was to prepare the body for the worst case.

According to his own account, the treatment is being accompanied by the Greifswald research group. As the report noted, the healing attempt is being led by Holger Lode, an expert in anti-GD2 immunotherapy, without whose approval such treatment cannot take place. The collaboration makes clear that, beyond standard clinical therapy, Gottschalk is also relying on research-oriented approaches.

The response on social media was overwhelming immediately after the post. Numerous fans, long-time companions and colleagues reacted with wishes for his recovery, emotional words and expressions of their long-standing connection. Gottschalk had previously announced that the outpouring of support meant a great deal to him — a sentence he now reiterated after the publication of the update.

At the same time, it remains to be seen how things will proceed medically.
