Greece has launched a pilot program that pays professional fishermen around Crete and in the southern Aegean bounties for catching the invasive silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus).

Bounty of 5.33 Euros per Kilogram

According to the news channel Skai, the program is initially aimed at professional fishermen around Crete and in the southern Aegean. They are to be paid 5.33 euros per kilogram of the invasive fish species. In doing so, the government is responding to growing complaints from the fishing industry, where the toadfish has been destroying nets and emptying catches for years.
