Greenpeace and the Samariterbund have called on the Austrian federal government to take heat protection for the population seriously and to anchor it in law, pointing to rising health risks from heat waves.

In a joint statement, the two organizations warned of the consequences of global heating also in Austria. „Die Folgen der Erderhitzung seien auch in Österreich deutlich spürbar, teilten sie mit. Hitzewellen würden zunehmen, länger dauern und die Gesundheit der Menschen gefährden." The associations see an urgent need for action at the federal policy level.

According to AGES heat mortality monitoring, 449 people died from heat in Austria in the summer of the previous year. This figure underscores the urgency of political measures, the organizations emphasized. Those particularly affected are older people, the chronically ill, pregnant women, and children.

Figures illustrate the urgency

Marc Dengler, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace in Austria, called for long-term measures from the federal government: „Es braucht dringend langfristige Maßnahmen von der Bundesregierung: mehr Geld für Gebäudesanierungen, mehr Grün in unseren Städten und ein sozial gerechtes Mietsystem, das Mietminderungen bei mangelhaftem Hitzeschutz gesetzlich verankert."
