Vienna, June 30, 2026
The Greens have accused the federal government of massive failures on climate protection and on concrete heat protection measures in light of the ongoing heatwave in Austria, and have demanded swift countermeasures.
Speaking in Vienna on Tuesday, parliamentary group leader Leonore Gewessler spoke of "anger at the federal government" and criticized that it "saves the most of all in climate and environmental protection." "Ich bin haaß, wie man auf wienerisch sagt," the Greens chief vented her frustration. The current heatwave is hitting Austria with full force, with temperatures climbing to up to 40 degrees Celsius in some places.
Anger at the coalition
What particularly angered Gewessler was that the government is doing "exactly the opposite" and continuing to subsidize "diesel and heating oil" instead of taking measures against global warming. Instead of taking countermeasures, investments are being made in "highway prestige projects," she criticized. "Klimaschutz ist deshalb zugleich Menschenschutz," said the parliamentary group leader.
