Wittenberge, 29 June 2026

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder, Brandenburg's Transport Minister Robert Crumbach, and Saxony-Anhalt's Infrastructure Minister Lydia Hüskens broke ground on Monday in Wittenberge for the replacement new build of the Elbe Bridge on the Bundesstraße 189.

The new bridge is intended to connect Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg in the future, replacing the roughly 1,000-meter structure spanning the river that carries the Bundesstraße 189 across the Elbe between Geestgottberg in the district of Stendal and Wittenberge in the district of Prignitz. The existing Elbe Bridge is considered dilapidated and is to be demolished in the coming months.
