Pep Guardiola has turned down an inquiry from the Italian Football Federation FIGC to serve as the future national team coach. The Italian sports newspaper "La Gazzetta dello Sport" quoted the Spaniard as saying: "Danke, ich fühle mich geehrt. Aber im Moment traue ich mir das nicht zu." The Italian news agency Ansa also reported on the rejection.
The refusal comes at an inconvenient time for the FIGC, as the federation has been searching for a successor for the position of national team coach for weeks. Italy disappointed at the recent World Cup and needs a sporting fresh start for upcoming tournaments. Guardiola, who won numerous titles with clubs such as FC Barcelona and Manchester City, was considered a top candidate.
