Rome, July 28, 2026

The Italian Football Federation has appointed Roberto Mancini as head coach of the men's national team for the second time, ending a nearly four-month search for a successor to Gennaro Gattuso, who resigned in April.

A History Marked by a Wandering Eye

Federation president Giovanni Malagò introduced Mancini as the new "Commissario Tecnico" on Tuesday afternoon in Rome. The 61-year-old thus returns to the post he previously held from 2018 to 2023. According to Malagò, Mancini is to restore form to a national team that has missed the World Cup three times in a row. A signed contract with the federation was not yet in place at the time of the press conference.
