Hamas authorities report deaths following Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip

The AFP news agency, citing the Hamas authorities, reported casualties in Tel al-Hawa, a densely populated neighborhood in the south of Gaza City. Independent verification of the figures was initially not possible.

Tel al-Hawa: Scene of Renewed Violence

Israel had signed the ceasefire in order to resolve the hostage issue and ease the humanitarian situation in the coastal area. Hamas, which is classified as a militant Islamist organization, recognized certain security guarantees in return.

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains catastrophic according to assessments by aid organizations. Reconstruction measures since the ceasefire have, according to international reports, made only sluggish progress, also because access for aid deliveries remained restricted.

The Hamas authorities, on the other hand, describe the attacks as violations of the ceasefire and demand international protection for the civilian population.

Both sides accuse each other of having violated the ceasefire. An independent investigation into the latest incidents is pending. The United Nations and various non-governmental organizations have expressed their concern about the ongoing violence.

The developments in Tel al-Hawa illustrate how fragile the calm in the Gaza Strip remains more than half a year after the ceasefire. The coming days will show whether the agreement holds or whether new negotiations will become necessary.
