CDU foreign policy expert Jürgen Hardt has called on the European Union to impose sanctions against Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
Hardt told Politico that Ben Gvir's statements could only be condemned by any human being. The EU should sanction the minister, "as a sign of the global validity of human dignity and human rights."
Verbatim: „Ben Gvirs menschenverachtende Äußerungen kann jeder Mensch nur verurteilen. Die EU sollte ihn sanktionieren als Zeichen für die weltweite Geltung von Menschenwürde und Menschenrechten“
The demand comes amid an ongoing phase of conflict in the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been conducting military operations against Hamas for months. Ben Gvir belongs to the far-right fringe of the Israeli coalition and has long attracted attention for harsh, provocative statements about Palestinians and the conduct of the war.
