On the occasion of the nationwide Heat Action Day, welfare associations and churches in Germany have called for better protection measures for homeless people and other groups at risk from heat.

Churches Open Their Buildings as Cool Places of Retreat

On the occasion of Heat Action Day, managing director Bösing said that in Hanover, homeless people are provided with water, sunscreen, and hygiene items on hot days. At the same time, she emphasized: "Nach wie vor fehle es aber an einer bundesweiten dauerhaft finanzierten Hitzeschutzstrategie für diese Gruppe." People living on the streets cannot escape the heat. They are "ohne Zugang zu Trinkwasser, Schatten oder kühlen Rückzugsort schutzlos ausgeliefert".
