During the heatwave from late June to early July 2026, the Austrian Ministry of Health and other expert agencies reported an exceptional burden on the population and registered elevated mortality.

The heatwave, which affected Austria from late June to early July 2026, led to an exceptional burden on the healthcare system according to the Ministry of Health. Authorities pointed out that heat periods of this intensity significantly increase the risk of health complications, particularly when they last several days and nighttime cooling fails to occur.

Warnings to At-Risk Groups

The Ministry and other expert agencies directed their warnings specifically at at-risk groups. The awareness campaign focused on older people, the chronically ill, pregnant women, people with disabilities, infants and young children, as well as their relatives and caregivers. For these groups, concrete protective measures were recommended, including adequate fluid intake, seeking out cool rooms, and reducing physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day.
