Vienna, October 3, 2026

The estimated number of heat-related deaths in Austria rose in summer 2026 to its highest level since heat mortality monitoring began in 2017, with 995 victims.

Highest figure since 2017

The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) estimated a total of 995 deaths for the months of June through August 2026 that are associated with heat. This surpassed the previous record high from the year before. Never before since the start of monitoring in 2017 had such a high figure been recorded, the authority said. The estimate is based on statistical models that relate observed deaths to the course of temperatures.
