Experts warn of a worryingly high number of mental disorders among children and adolescents in Austria and are calling for a massive expansion of care structures.

Situation in Austria

Georg Psota, long-standing chief physician of the Vienna Psychosocial Services (PSD), pointed to the high burden on the younger generation at the Forum Alpbach. "Among ten- to 18-year-olds, we have a point prevalence of mental illnesses of 23.9 percent," said Psota. This means that on any given day, almost every fourth child or adolescent is affected. Over an entire year, the so-called annual prevalence is even around 35 percent.

Particularly common are anxiety disorders, ADHD, depression, and substance abuse. "Da sind am häufigsten Angststörungen, ADHS, Depressionen und Substanzmissbrauch," Psota explained. While all severity levels are aggregated in these figures, they are still worryingly high. Around 15 percent of children and adolescents need to be treated.
