Austrian Women’s Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner (SPÖ) has spoken out in favor of a mandatory women’s quota on electoral lists in an interview with the weekly newspaper "Falter" and has announced a change to electoral law. "Wenn eine Partei antreten will, muss eine bestimmte Prozentzahl an Listenplätzen mit Frauen besetzt sein", said Holzleitner. The exact level of this quota would need to be discussed, the minister added.

To justify her position, Holzleitner pointed to experiences in other countries with mandatory quota regulations. These showed that binding requirements are more effective than voluntary self-commitments by parties. She announced that she wanted to put the issue on the political agenda in the medium to long term.
