Austrian Science Minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner (SPÖ) on Friday pushed back against claims that public universities face a billion-euro budget cut starting in 2028, describing the past week as her toughest since taking office in March 2025.
"Ich habe nicht viel geschlafen in den vergangenen Tagen," Holzleitner remarked almost in passing at a Friday afternoon press conference, acknowledging the intensity of the uproar.
The controversy erupted after the Universities' Conference (Uniko) interpreted the government's planning and immediately warned that one billion euros would be slashed from the three-year university budget of 16.1 billion euros for the period 2028–2030. That interpretation sparked widespread anger among university rectors and the academic community.
Holzleitner confirmed that negotiations for the double budget covering 2027 and 2028 are complete. However, she stressed that the decision on specific savings for the 2028–2030 university budget period has been postponed.
