Hong Kong, August 22, 2026

In Hong Kong, leading organizers of the Tiananmen vigils held for decades have been found guilty by a court, including the well-known activist Chow Hang-tung and former chair Albert Ho.

Background of the vigils

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China organized a candlelight vigil for many years on June 4 to commemorate the victims of the bloody crackdown on the protests in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989. After authorities in Hong Kong effectively halted the annual gatherings from 2020 onward, several leading figures of the alliance came into the crosshairs of the justice system. With the verdict now handed down, a legal proceeding ends that is internationally regarded as a politically motivated act against the culture of remembrance in the Special Administrative Region.
