US Secretary of State Marco Rubio marked the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown on Thursday by saying that Chinese government censorship cannot erase the events of 4 June 1989, as authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong tightened restrictions on commemorations.

Background: The 1989 Crackdown

On 4 June 1989, Chinese troops moved into central Beijing to clear demonstrators who had occupied Tiananmen Square to call for democratic reforms. The military action killed hundreds of people, and Amnesty International has estimated that as many as 3,000 may have died in the broader crackdown across the city. The events have been suppressed in mainland China ever since, where the topic remains taboo and where the authorities continue to try to prevent any public discussion or remembrance.
