Added to this are rising costs for energy, fertilizers, and machinery, while producer prices for hops remain under pressure. Many operations say they no longer see a way to finance investments in modern equipment or heat-resistant varieties on their own.

Internationally, the situation is also tense. The United States, one of the world's largest hop producers, faces similar challenges. Global demand for hops is closely tied to developments in the beer market, where non-alcoholic beers and other beverages are also gaining market share.

Brewing giant AB InBev, one of the world's largest hop buyers, is being closely watched by analysts. Between July 31 and August 5, 2026, several major banks rated the company differently: UBS recommended "Buy," RBC Capital Markets "Outperform," JP Morgan Chase & Co. "Overweight," DZ BANK "Kaufen," and Deutsche Bank "Hold." The range of ratings reflects uncertainty about the future business performance of the brewing giant.

For hop growers, these ratings indirectly mean that even large brewing corporations are planning cautiously and adjusting their purchase volumes to match declining demand. Falling order volumes from major breweries directly affect producer prices and thus farmers' incomes.

Demands on Policymakers

The Association of German Hop Growers is therefore calling for political support, for example with irrigation infrastructure, in promoting climate-adapted varieties, and in safeguarding competitiveness against foreign competition. Without such assistance, a further decline in growing areas threatens in the coming years.

Adi Schapfl and other hop farmers see the coming years as decisive. They warn that many operations could give up without rapid support, endangering hop cultivation in Germany as a whole.

Impact on Consumers and Beer Diversity

Consumers in Germany are so far feeling the consequences mainly in the form of rising beer prices. In the medium and long term, the variety of available beers could diminish if regional hop suppliers collapse and breweries increasingly resort to imported raw materials.

Industry experts assume that the crisis can only be overcome through a combination of climate-change adaptation, new varieties, political support, and a possible recovery in the beer market. Until then, the situation for hop growers remains tense.
