Budapest, July 16, 2026
The Hungarian government has ordered the removal of asbestos-containing gravel in the Szombathely area after an asbestos scandal that has been triggering growing public concern since the spring of 2026.
The authorities assume that 84,000 tons of contaminated gravel will need to be excavated. The net total costs are estimated at 3.6 billion forints (approximately 10.01 million euros). This is the largest connected remediation case to date in the Hungarian road network, stemming from the asbestos scandal that has been unfolding since the spring of 2026.
Scale in Szombathely
In Szombathely, a city in western Hungary near the border with Burgenland, 22 streets with a total length of twelve kilometers are affected. According to calculations, around 1,500 residents live in the catchment area of these routes, whose living environment came into direct contact with the contaminated material. The authorities classify the contamination as a health risk.
