Due to the low water levels of the Danube, Hungary wants to temporarily take a unit of the Paks nuclear power plant offline and has asked large companies to voluntarily reduce their electricity consumption between 5 and 10 p.m.
Background: Paks as the backbone of electricity supply
The Hungarian government is responding with this measure to the tense situation on the Danube, whose water level has been well below seasonal averages for weeks. The river supplies the Paks power plant in the south of the country with cooling water; if the water level drops too sharply, the cooling of the reactors can no longer be reliably guaranteed. The authorities consider the situation to be serious, but emphasize that the country's electricity supply has so far remained stable.
