Krefeld, July 12, 2026
Former ice hockey referee Josef "Jupp" Kompalla passed away on Sunday at the age of 90 following a brief, serious illness, as announced by the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), citing his family.
From player to referee
Josef Kompalla was born in March 1936 in Kattowitz, Upper Silesia, and was regarded for decades as one of the defining figures in German ice hockey. After his active career as a defenseman, during which he played for, among others, Preussen Krefeld, he later officiated more than 2,000 top-flight league games as well as more than 150 international matches. He was also active as a player for the Polish national ice hockey team before he fled to Germany and began a second career as an official there.
Kompalla had begun his training as a referee in the late 1960s. He quickly rose to the major international events: as an official, he was on duty at the 1976, 1980, and 1984 Olympic Games and also took part in several Ice Hockey World Championships. At times, Kompalla was even referred to as the "best referee."
