In the course of investigations against eight justice employees of the Rheinbach correctional facility, police forces on Tuesday morning searched the detention center as well as eight apartments in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate; NRW Justice Minister Benjamin Limbach immediately ordered tightened bag checks for prison personnel statewide.
According to the information, eight employees of JVA Rheinbach — five men and three women aged between 28 and 59 — are suspected of having smuggled cell phones and drugs into the facility for payment and passed them on to prisoners. As Bonn police spokesperson Michael Beyer stated, the investigations for offences in office also target current and former inmates of the facility. The searches began on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.; according to police, around 60 officers were involved in the operation.
