A new Ipsos survey commissioned by APA shows that while the majority of the Austrian population is in favor of a phone ban in schools, a ban on artificial intelligence in the classroom is clearly rejected.
Clear Majority for Phone Ban
The survey conducted by opinion research institute Ipsos, published in August 2026, paints a nuanced picture of attitudes toward digital technologies in schools. While mobile phones should no longer play a role in the classroom and on school grounds, according to the respondents, the use of artificial intelligence by students is predominantly regarded as conducive to learning.
In the open-ended responses of the study, participants name a number of problems that they consider particularly pressing for domestic youth. In addition to dealing with migration and rising costs of living, bullying and group pressure, digital dependency, and the effects of social media and AI were mentioned.
