Survey: 83 Percent of Germans Use AI – Attitude Remains Ambivalent

The Austrian population is likewise divided on AI. „Zwar steht rund ein Drittel der Bevölkerung KI grundsätzlich positiv gegenüber“, the survey states. A similarly large group harbors reservations or rejects the technology.

Four out of ten respondents in Austria view the growing mass of AI-generated images, texts, and the like negatively. Nearly six out of ten respondents say they regularly encounter such content. One in two consumes such content rather reluctantly, one third even deliberately reduces their own social media consumption. One in three already reports a change in usage behavior.

Difficulties Detecting

The perceived quality falls short of expectations and is rated on average as only mediocre. Three quarters of respondents assume this development will continue to increase in the future. Only about a quarter of the population feels confident in reliably recognizing AI-generated content.

When identifying such content, users pay particular attention to elements that seem unnatural (49 percent). 35 percent become suspicious when the content is too smooth or perfect, 43 percent look out for factual inconsistencies. At the same time, skepticism is growing: 47 percent of respondents question content on social media more critically, and trust is declining (54 percent).

In addition to declining quality of online content (46 percent), 44 percent fear the spread of disinformation through so-called "AI slop." Concern about forgeries and manipulation thus shapes a significant part of perceptions.

Demand for Labeling

ChatGPT and the like are used especially for quick research and gathering information (62 percent). Above all, younger people also use them increasingly for creating, revising, or summarizing texts. AI has thus become established as a working and research tool.

In light of the uncertainty, an overwhelming majority of 85 percent advocate mandatory labeling of AI-generated content. The demand for transparency cuts across all population groups.

The study authors interpret the results as evidence of a society in transition: AI is being used, but it is also being watched critically. How the balance between benefit and trust develops in the coming years, they say, will also depend on whether regulation and labeling requirements are actually implemented.

Overall, the survey paints a picture of broad but cautious adoption. The high usage rate in Germany and the Austrian population's desire for clear rules make clear that Artificial Intelligence has arrived as an everyday tool – at the same time, the desire for control and orientation is growing.
