Jerusalem, May 12, 2026 Israel military tribunal law for Hamas attackers passes 93-120
Israel's parliament voted late Monday to establish military tribunals for hundreds of Palestinian fighters accused of participating in the October 7 attack led by Hamas. The law passed with overwhelming support, securing 93 votes in the 120-member Knesset.
Broad Support and Legal Concerns
The legislation, which cleared its final hurdle with a broad majority, paves the way for trials of an estimated 200 to 300 detained fighters captured during the assault. These individuals have not yet faced formal charges.
Ya'ara Mordecai, an international law expert at Yale Law School, raised concerns about the tribunals' adherence to due process. She warned the proceedings risked becoming politicized "show trials," echoing broader apprehensions about fairness. "Die Völkerrechtsexpertin Ya'ara Mordecai von der Yale Law School äußerte Bedenken hinsichtlich eines rechtsstaatlichen Verfahrens und des Risikos, dass die Prozesse zu politisierten 'Schauprozessen' werden könnten," she said.
