The US space agency NASA has named the Italian Luca Parmitano as the first ESA astronaut for the Artemis Moon program; he is set to launch into Earth orbit in 2027 with the Artemis 3 mission.

As NASA chief Jared Isaacman announced, Luca Parmitano is one of the four astronauts who are to fly into space in 2027 with the Artemis 3 mission. "Der erste ESA-Astronaut auf einer „Artemis"-Mission wird der Italiener Luca Parmitano", the announcement stated. Parmitano is thus the first European to fly as part of NASA's Moon program – but not to land on the Moon.

Artemis 3 without Moon landing

Instead, the docking of the "Orion" spacecraft with Moon landing systems is to be tested. "Artemis 3" is to launch into Earth orbit in 2027 for tests. Unlike originally planned, no Moon landing is envisaged for this mission: "Anders als ursprünglich geplant ist bei „Artemis 3" keine Mondlandung vorgesehen", NASA stated. Bob Hines is on standby as a backup in case of emergency.
