Italian police crack down on illegal beach reservations in several seaside resorts

These also concerned the allegation that the income from the unlawful rentals had not been taxed.

The accused now face charges including unlawful appropriation of public property and tax evasion. Should the suspicion be confirmed, they face fines and the confiscation of the seized materials. The authorities announced that controls along the coasts would continue in the coming weeks.

Reactions from the coastal municipalities

In the affected municipalities, the operation provoked mixed reactions. While residents and representatives of environmental initiatives welcomed the move, operators of legal beach clubs pointed to the economic pressure caused by the high number of foreign tourists and the small margins in the industry. Local politicians from Sestri Levante also called for a fundamental reform of Italian beach law.

Observers interpret the coordinated operations as a signal from the government in Rome that it intends to enforce free access to public beaches more strongly.
