Italy's Sports Minister Andrea Abodi has expressed outrage over a joking comment by FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding Italy's failed World Cup qualification and has demanded a personal conversation with the head of FIFA.

The Trigger: Infantino's Interview with CazéTV

The dispute was ignited by an interview Infantino had given to the Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV. In it, the FIFA president had speculated in a joking tone about a possible expansion of the World Cup to 64 or even 228 teams and remarked that Italy might qualify at a 64-team World Cup. Infantino's exact words: "Vielleicht qualifiziert sich Italien bei einer WM mit 64 Teams - oder wir gehen sogar hoch auf 228 Teams." The remark was made with reference to the current World Cup finals in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, for which Italy once again failed to qualify.
