Zurich, 11 July 2026

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has not ruled out another expansion of the football World Cup from the current 48 to 64 participating nations in the future, announcing corresponding deliberations after the tournament in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino considers a further enlargement of the World Cup field of participants conceivable. When asked about a possible expansion to 64 teams, the Swiss told the portal "blue Sport": "Nach der WM müssen wir überlegen, auf jeden Fall." Such a decision formally rests with the FIFA Council, which also includes DFB President Bernd Neuendorf.

The 2026 World Cup has been held since 11 June 2026 for the first time in three countries simultaneously — the USA, Mexico, and Canada. The matches are scheduled across 38 tournament days. A total of 104 matches will be played, more than ever before at a World Cup. The number of participating teams has also been significantly increased with the expansion to 48 nations.

Infantino's interim verdict: Expansion a success

Infantino drew a positive interim conclusion during the ongoing tournament. The expansion to 48 teams is "ein riesiger Erfolg," said the 56-year-old. He also pushed back against criticism of the strain on players: Even with a further expansion to 64 teams, the maximum would remain eight matches per team, if the additional 16 nations were accommodated in four additional groups.
