Italy has tasked the competition authority AGCM with examining potential market distortions by airlines following a sudden spike in domestic airfares.

Industry Minister Adolfo Urso spoke on Tuesday of a "sudden and unusual" price increase and ordered an investigation by the competition authority AGCM, according to Italian media reports. The move comes amid complaints from consumer advocates about significantly more expensive tickets on domestic routes.

Price jump of 38 percent

Massimiliano Dona, president of the consumer protection organization Unione Nazionale Consumatori (UDC), said domestic flight prices had risen by 38 percent from May to June. The association Assoutenti had also previously criticized steep price hikes on routes to the south and the islands.
