The Institute of the German Economy (IW) projects that Germany will lack about 4.3 million workers in 2036 and is calling on policymakers to take more measures to tap the labor force potential.

As the "Rheinische Post" reports, around 4.3 million workers are expected to be missing in 2036. This makes the gap significantly larger than in the previous IW forecast from two years ago, which had put the figure at just under 3 million. Compared with the older estimate, this represents an increase of about 1.3 million missing workers.

The reason for the revision is a new calculation by the Federal Statistical Office on long-term population development, according to the report. Accordingly, the demographic outlook will worsen. Based on this forecast, the IW researchers assume that Germany's population in 2045 will be only around 81.1 million people – a decline of 2.9 percent compared with today's level.
