Japan’s Calbee Inc. will shift packaging for 14 of its snack products to black-and-white starting May 25 as geopolitical disruptions strain supplies of ink materials.
The Tokyo-based company, known for its potato chips and shrimp snacks, confirmed the move is a response to shortages of naphtha, an oil-derived product used in ink and plastics. Calbee emphasized that the contents of its products remain unchanged despite the stark visual shift.
Impact on Product Lines
Calbee’s popular "usu shio" (lightly salted) potato chips, originally sold in a bright-orange bag featuring a potato-man mascot, will now appear in monochrome packaging. The change affects a range of snacks sold in Japan’s convenience stores and exported to the U.S., China, and Australia.
