Jens Spahn steps down as Union faction leader – Pressure from the CDU over surrogacy

With his withdrawal, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group loses one of its most prominent figures. In recent years, Spahn had been considered one of the most influential politicians in the Union and had led the parliamentary group even through difficult political phases. Legal background of surrogacy

Surrogacy is legally severely restricted in Germany. It is still unclear who will succeed him at the head of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
