Jessica Pilz reaches the final again at the Climbing World Cup in Chamonix

Despite the subdued semifinal performance, Pilz expressed satisfaction with her latest final appearance. About her third straight final, the Olympic bronze medalist said she was "schon sehr happy", but she is hoping for another step up in the decisive round.

Chamonix as a World Cup highlight

The World Cup in Chamonix ranks among the most tradition-rich stops on the international federation's climbing calendar. Against the backdrop at the foot of Mont Blanc, the world's best lead climbers regularly come together.

Jakob Schubert was also among the starters as another Austrian. Schubert has belonged to the world's elite in lead climbing for years and likewise reached the semifinal, where he was eliminated. His appearance underscores the strong presence of the Austrian team on the international competition circuit.

In lead competition, athletes must secure a route on an overhanging wall to as great a height as possible. Every hold counts – the final routes are shown to the participants only immediately before the start, requiring tactical reading and quick adaptation.

Lead climbing: discipline and tactics

The women's world elite is currently dominated by Japanese and South Korean climbers. Pilz has consistently belonged to the extended circle of favorites for several years and celebrated her biggest success to date with the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Paris.

For the upcoming World Cup stops, the Austrian plans, by her own account, to raise her level in the final. The focus is on delivering in the decisive round the performance she had already shown in semifinal training.

The 2026 season is so far one of the most consistent of Pilz's career: with three consecutive final appearances, she is among the athletes who perform most reliably at the highest level. A medal in Chamonix could further enhance that record.
