John Ternus takes over at Apple in early September, ushering in the AI era

The outgoing CEO, Tim Cook, had led the company since 2011, during which time he multiplied its revenue and market capitalization. Cook took over the position after the death of Steve Jobs and made Apple one of the world’s most valuable publicly traded companies. Apple has not yet provided further details about the reasons for the change. In a brief statement to investors and employees, the company referred to an orderly transition.

Who is John Ternus?

At an internal event, Ternus recently announced that Apple would consistently continue its course in AI development. “Apple Intelligence wird das Herzstück unserer Strategie für die nächste Dekade sein“, Ternus said, according to a report by the dpa news agency. At the same time, the company must continue to pursue the goal of making technology user-friendly and privacy-friendly.

At next week’s iPhone event in Cupertino, Ternus will appear publicly for the first time in his new role. Industry observers expect new hardware models as well as, above all, software advances in Apple Intelligence, which is regarded as the flagship for AI features on iPhone, iPad and Mac. With a significantly broader range of functions, the system is also expected to be more interoperable with third-party services in the future.

Economically, Apple faces a mixed starting position. On the one hand, the company remains the market leader in the premium smartphone segment in several regions; on the other hand, pressure is increasing from cheaper competitors in Asia. There are also regulatory risks, such as those associated with ongoing antitrust proceedings in the European Union and the question of how Apple will reconcile its AI models with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act.

Economic and political framework conditions

Politically, large US technology companies are currently facing increasing demands from Washington to concentrate more manufacturing and research domestically. Apple, too, announced investments in US locations in recent months. Ternus is considered a supporter of a balanced supply-chain strategy that retains some production in the United States while continuing existing partnerships in Asia.

For the capital markets, the change at the top is regarded as expected and already priced in. The share price reacted only minimally to the first indications of the change in leadership. Analysts pointed out that Ternus had long been regarded as the heir apparent and that the transition had been carefully prepared. Nevertheless, his first earnings press conference in the autumn is seen as a litmus test of whether he can put his own stamp on the company.

Outlook: What can now be expected from Apple?

With his arrival in office, the next phase of Apple’s long succession of CEOs also begins. After Steve Jobs returned in 1997, he reinvented the company with the introduction of the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Cook subsequently built up the services business and transformed Apple into an integrated provider of hardware, software and services. Ternus now faces the task of linking these three pillars to the requirements of an AI-driven product world.

In the coming months, Ternus is likely to be judged primarily on how quickly Apple rolls out its own AI models on devices and which business models can be developed around Apple Intelligence. Industry experts also expect Apple to reorganize its cooperation with external AI providers in order to reduce dependencies. The first public appearance at the iPhone presentation is therefore likely to be less a retrospective than a statement of direction.
