Jordan Bardella: Can the 30-year-old succeed Marine Le Pen in the 2027 French presidential race?

That candidate is most likely Jordan Bardella. At 30, he already leads the RN, a post he took on largely because Le Pen cannot hold public office until 2030 under a judicial decision. His standing is no accident: he was named party spokesman at 21, and his social media reach — 2.3 million TikTok followers — has helped reposition the party for younger voters. "Die Popularität von Jordan Bardella übersteigt mittlerweile die von Marine Le Pen," one analyst noted, signaling a generational shift inside the movement.

Yet Bardella's elevation is not without risk. Klaus Welle, who served as secretary-general of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2022, cautioned that the young leader has "erhebliche Schwächen, insbesondere einen Mangel an Erfahrung" — significant weaknesses, especially a lack of experience. Another analyst went further, warning that leads in opinion polls do not automatically translate into Élysée victories.

Policy reset: pensions, Schengen, citizenship

Beyond personality, the policy platform is being recalibrated. Welle observed that Bardella recognizes the need to shift the debate back to a "traditionelleren Links-Rechts-Debatte" — a more conventional left-right framing — and is willing to distance himself from Le Pen's pledges to preserve the French pension system, a stance likely to resonate more with the middle class than with the working class. A separate policy line cited is the proposal to keep freedom of movement within the Schengen area exclusively for European citizens, which would in effect create double border controls in and around France.

On immigration, Bardella has argued that "der automatische Erwerb der französischen Staatsangehörigkeit … in einer Welt mit acht Milliarden Menschen nicht mehr gerechtfertigt" is no longer justified, proposing that children of foreign parents only be able to apply for French citizenship at age 18. Rhetoric aside, analysts note a softer personal style: "Er ist sozial," one observer said of the RN founder's view of him, even as Bardella was seen at the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix alongside his fiancée, Princess Maria Carolina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. Welle compared the two leaders bluntly: "Sie ist nicht besonders kooperativ und eher der aggressive Typ, während Bardella offener ist."

The Le Pen dynasty and its limits

Le Pen's legal troubles cast a long shadow. Court rulings could exclude her from the 2027 ballot — "Wird das Urteil bestätigt, würde die Galionsfigur des Rassemblement National (RN) von der Teilnahme an den Präsidentschaftswahlen 2027 zweifellos ausgeschlossen," one account warned. Her setbacks with foreign figures are also instructive: Donald Trump reportedly declined to receive her at Trump Tower, and earlier overtures to Vladimir Putin produced only the line "Putin hat den Russen ihre Lebensfreude zurückgegeben."

The dynasty behind Bardella is the Le Pen clan. Jean-Marie Le Pen, who died in January 2025 at the age of 96 at his villa in Montretout, founded the Front National in 1972 and built it into a force that reached the 2002 runoff against Jacques Chirac. Marine Le Pen took over in 2011 and reshaped the party. According to verified accounts, the relationship between father and daughter was so bitter that Jean-Marie wished she would drop his name as quickly as possible, while he simultaneously promoted his favored granddaughter, Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, whose positions stood roughly as the opposite of what her aunt envisioned.

What the polls really mean

Now, with Jean-Marie Le Pen's death, "eine Élysée-Wahl ohne den Namen Le Pen" — an Élysée race without the Le Pen name — would be a first since 1981. Thibault Muzergues, political director at Shared Ground and author of "La droite woke," argues that several factors explain Bardella's rise: "seine Jugend, die ihm Abstand zu den kontroverseren Aspekten der Geschichte der Partei unter Jean-Marie Le Pen verschafft; sein Name – er ist eben kein Le Pen; sein Gespür für die sozialen Medien und seine gepflegte, gewandte Persönlichkeit."

Polling analysts are cautious. Blanche Leridon argues that a strong showing would make the RN "eine deutlich stärkeren Kraft." But the same analysts warn against treating a poll lead as a finished outcome. Whether Bardella can convert popularity into victory will depend on turnout, on coalition dynamics, and on whether Le Pen herself can run. Welle concludes that whoever leads the party, "versuchen werden, etwas Abstand zu gewinnen und sich als eigenständige politische Kraft darzustellen" — they will try to project themselves as an independent political force.
